EEG–EMG Information Flow in Movement-Activated Myoclonus in Patients with Progressive Myoclonic Epilepsies

چکیده
We aimed this study at verifying the appropriateness of generalized partial directed coherence (GPDC) in detecting EEG–EMG information flow and identifying the characteristics of myoclonus-related EEG changes in patients with progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME). Our results indicate that GPDC analysis is able to detect the presence of a different pattern of connectivity between the EMG and sensorimotor EEG derivations in all patients, namely a larger and more extensive flow of information in beta band coming out from the cortex and driving the muscular activity in patients with respect to controls.

Clinical presentations and phenomenology of myoclonus.
The term "myoclonus" has been used to describe heterogeneous phenomena involving sudden movements, but there is no generally accepted, precise definition of myoclonus. Myoclonus can often be classified based on electroencephalographic (EEG) and/or electromyographic (EMG) data. Some myoclonic epilepsy syndromes, including juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, may frequently be misdiagnosed because of fai...
متن کاملLate-onset myoclonic epilepsy in Down’s syndrome (LOMEDS)
The aim of this paper is to report a patient with late-onset myoclonic epilepsy in Down's syndrome (LOMEDS) as a differential diagnosis of adult-onset progressive myoclonic epilepsies. A 55-year-old male with Down's syndrome (DS) is described who developed progressively frequent myoclonus and generalized myoclonic-tonic seizures (GMTSs) at the age of 52. EEG recordings demonstrated background s...
متن کاملAbnormal corticomuscular and intermuscular coupling in high-frequency rhythmic myoclonus.
Frequency analysis may have some advantages over back-averaging in the neurophysiological assessment of patients with suspected cortical myoclonus in whom myoclonic EMG bursts repeat rhythmically at high frequency. However, the clinical utility of EEG-EMG coherence and related EMG-EMG coherence is not established. Equally, there is an incomplete understanding of the physiology of the systems co...
متن کاملLongitudinal EEG studies in a kindred with Lafora disease.
We reviewed 18 EEG studies in four members of a family with the Lafora form of progressive myoclonic epilepsy. Each patient was the product of a consanguinous marriage and presented as a teenager with progressive seizures, myoclonus, dementia, and ataxia, and had biopsy proven disease. The EEG early in Lafora disease has spike-wave activity resembling that seen in a primary generalized epilepsy...
متن کاملAtaxia, dystonia and myoclonus in adult patients with Niemann-Pick type C
BACKGROUND Niemann-Pick type C (NP-C) is a rare autosomal recessive progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in the NP-C 1 or 2 gene. Besides visceral symptoms, presentation in adolescent and adult onset variants is often with neurological symptoms. The most frequently reported presenting symptoms of NP-C in adulthood are psychiatric symptoms (38 %), cognitive decline (23 %) a...
